Alessandro Difilippo

Doctoral Student

Alessandro's research interests focus on understanding oxygen evolution reaction catalysts for PEM water electrolysers.

His project uses in situ optical spectroscopy analysis of the catalysts to measure the surface density of redox species of iridium oxide catalyst with applied bias, and their involvement in the catalysis of the OER. In turn, this is used to investigate the influence of the local structure of iridium in: (1) different amorphous and crystalline regions of the catalyst, (2) catalyst layers with varying proton-conducting polymer (Nafion) concentration, and (3) ruthenium- or manganese-doped oxides.

He completed his MSci at Imperial College London, following an industrial placement at Johnson Matthey Technology Centre. In both settings, he worked on testing protocol development on the Floating Electrode to characterise OER catalysts and understanding testing history effects on catalytic performance.
